GMAT/GRE - Premise and Conclusion

28/06/2017

What is Premise? What is Conclusion?

Each argument has a logical conclusion.

First, let us understand what is the link between premise and conclusion.

Premise is a proposition that forms an argument which has a conclusion.

Conclusion is a proposition based on one or several premises.

For example: If students are ill, they are allowed to miss the university. Universities will accept it only with a reference from a doctor. Therefore, students not having doctor`s references will not be allowed to miss the university.

Premise 1 -  If students are ill, they are allowed to miss the university

Premise 2 - Universities will accept it only with a reference from a doctor.

Conclusion - Therefore, students not having doctor`s references will not be allowed to miss the university. (therefore is a linker showing a conclusion, however, it is not compulsory that some linkers will be used to show a conclusion; do not forget that GMAT / GRE questions are so tricky)
